For Gilgamesh, wine is a passion, and one of the studio’s top 10 favorite wine farms is Saronsberg. Gilgamesh has had the opportunity to design two sub-brands, including packaging and labels for this iconic South African wine farm, which is nestled in the Tulbagh valley, in the world-renowned wine-making region of the Western Cape.
Black Square Series (2011)
Intended to be a “gallery-on-a-label”, the Black Square series is a curated art space on a wine label. It is the result of a collaboration between Saronsberg and a local South African restaurant called Harrie’s Pancakes, which is a sister brand to an experimental art platform called Modern Art Projects (MAP). Periodically, a different label is released, created by a new artist who is selected by the curatorial team at MAP. Gilgamesh had the privilege of being the first design in the series with a label titled “Anticube Black – Construct MAP”.
Saronsberg Unity (2014)
Unity is another sub-brand of Saronsberg wine farm, produced for the Scandinavian market. Although Saronsberg never ended up using this particular design, settling for another design proposed by Gilgamesh, the concept for this label takes inspiration from the Viking heritage akin to the target audience’s history and geography. The bind rune, the symbol of unity, is a character of central importance in the alphabet of post-Viking age Scandinavia.
