Braamfontein Brewery.

The Braamfontein Brewery is a failed attempt to start a craft beer brand in Braamfontein, a trendy, slightly dirty, cultural section in the heart of Johannesburg, South Africa. Two craft beer ranges were planned, Old Dirty Bastard and I Salute You! Being Braamfontein-based, drawing upon the colonial history of the area, the image of Lord Kitchener was appropriated as an almost satirical, tongue-in-cheek, icon for the brand, channeling a bit of Mike Meyers’ infamous movie character, Austin Powers.

The actual craft beer was not planned to be made in Braamfontein itself but rather produced in partnership with an award-winning brewery in Cullinan (an old mining town just outside Johannesburg famous for the Cullinan diamond), called The Cockpit Brewery. Hence the overall theme, which was centered upon World War 1 and 2 imagery and aesthetics. The craft beer would only be available at various venues and events in Braamfontein.

Old Dirty Bastard.

Old Dirty Bastard was conceptualised to be one of two sub-brands for Gilgamesh’s failed Braamfontein Brewery project. Seen here, proposed labels and packaging design. The underlying theme here is World War aircraft, referencing the British Spitfire, US Northrop P-61 Black Widow, and the German Fokker.

I Salute You!

I Salute You! is the second range of two product ranges proposed for Gilgamesh’s failed attempt to start a brewery in Braamfontein, Johannesburg. The underlying theme here references classic early 20th-century beer label design, particularly designs from the time of World War 1.
